    Die Familie besaß im 15. Jahrhundert das Gut „zum Grole“ bei Wattenscheid, wonach der Inhaber des Hofes „Grolmann“ genannt wurde; seit Ende 16. Jahrhundert Bürger in Bochum. Zu ihr gehören: →Ludwig (1741–1809, Onkel väterlicherseits von 2), hessen-darmstädtischer Wirklicher Geheimer Rat, Regierungs- und Konsistorialdirektor, und dessen Enkel →Adolf (1812–87), hessen-darmstädtischer Generalleutnant und Generaladjutant, ferner Friedrich (preußischer Adel 1871, 1817-81), preußischer Generalleutnant (s. Priesdorff VIII, S. 155 f., Porträt), dessen Sohn →Friedrich (1852–1927), preußischer Generalleutnant, und dessen Sohn Fritz (* 1890), Kabinettsdirektor und Adjutant des Herzogs von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha, und die Schriftsteller →Wilhelm (1863–1935) und Adolf (* 1888).
