  • Biographical Presentation

    Nachdem G. bereits 3 Jahre Theologie studiert hat, tritt er 29jährig in das Noviziat der Jesuiten ein, die ihn am Collegium Romanum bei Clavius zum Mathematiker heranbilden. Als solcher ist er 1597 in Graz, wo er Kepler kennenlernt und mit Herwart von Hohenburg in Verbindung bringt. Nach Rom zurückbeordert, wird er engster Mitarbeiter von Clavius, 1612 sein Nachfolger. Als große Aufgabe erwartet ihn die Ausbildung eines mathematisch-astronomisch qualifizierten Nachwuchses für die Chinamission der Jesuiten; zu seinen Schülern gehören Schall von Bell, Terrentius (Schreck), Kirwitzer, Gregorius a St. Vincentio (dem jedoch die Ausreise verweigert wird). Kopernikaner und eingenommen für Galilei, wird G. wohl deshalb trotz seiner Stellung (tamquam mathematicarum rerum patronus) nicht zum Galileiprozeß zugezogen. – Zur Astronomie steuert G. einen neuen Fixsternkatalog (Rom 1612) bei, außerdem die „Prospectiva nova coelestis“ (Rom 1612). In der Optik arbeitet er weniger literarisch („De speculo ustorio elliptico“, Rom 1613) als praktisch und gemeinsam mit Ch. Scheiner. Eine bedeutende technische Begabung, die ihm nachgerühmt wird, kommt nach Guldin der römischen Handwerker wegen nicht zu voller Auswirkung. Auf mathematischem Gebiet hat G. Lehrbücher geschrieben.
