  • Biographical Presentation

    G. studierte Medizin in Bonn, Freiburg und München (Approbation und Promotion 1913), war Assistent am Gisela-Kinderspital in München und am Pathologischen Institut in Berlin und 1914-19 im Heeresdienst. Dann arbeitete er bis 1925 an der Universität-Kinderklinik Jena unter J. Ibrahim (Habilitation 1922, nb. außerordentlicher Professor 1924). 1925 übernahm G. als Ordinarius die Kinderklinik in Halle. 1937 folgte er einem Ruf an die Medizinische Akademie Düsseldorf als Nachfolger von A. Czerny; dort war er seit 1938 zugleich ärztlicher Direktor der Städtischen Krankenanstalten. Als ihr erster Nachkriegsrektor hat er entscheidend zur Erhaltung der Düsseldorfer Akademie beigetragen. – G.s Arbeiten betreffen unter anderem den Eiweißstoffwechsel, Darmparasiten, Anämie des Kindesalters, Ernährungsstörungen und Infektionskrankheiten, besonders Masern (G.sches Masernphänomen), Poliomyelitis und Tuberkulose. Besondere Verdienste hat sich G. nach dem Kriege um die Einführung der Streptomycin-Therapie der Tuberkulose in Deutschland erworben.|
