  • Biographical Presentation

    Auf einem Ritt nach Jülich zum Turnier erfuhr G. den Tod seiner Frau, sagte aller Ritterschaft ab, pilgerte nach Rom und Jerusalem, wo er 7 Jahre in einem Spital diente. Dann erlaubte ihm Papst Hadrian IV., als Eremit auf eigenem Besitz zu büßen, ohne einem Orden oder Kloster beizutreten. Täglich ging er zur Matutin nach Maastricht, samstags nach Aachen. Von weither besuchten und befragten ihn viele, auch →Hildegard von Bingen verehrte ihn. Sein Grab wurde zum Wallfahrtsort, an dem ein Prämonstratenser-Doppelkloster gegründet und um 1225 nach guter mündlicher Überlieferung (auch Liedern) seine Vita geschrieben wurde (AA SS Januar I, 306-20). In Houthem-Sint-Gerlach wird er noch als Heiliger verehrt. Er glich vielen Ritter-Eremiten der Artus- und Grals-Epik wie Trevrizent in Wolframs Parzival.
