  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach dem Studium in Göttingen und Kiel habilitierte sich B. 1878 in Kiel als Privatdozent für Altes Testament, wurde daselbst 1884 außerordentlicher Professor, kam in gleicher Eigenschaft 1888 nach Halle, wurde 1889 in Greifswald ordentlicher Professor und zugleich Konsistorialrat und ging 1895 als ordentlicher Professor nach Berlin. In Übereinstimmung mit seinem nur wenig älteren Landsmann J. Wellhausen hat er die historisch-kritische Arbeit in der alttestamentlichen Wissenschaft, besonders auf philologischem und religionsgeschichtlichem Gebiet, wesentlich gefördert und zugleich selbständige wissenschaftliche Arbeit auf semitistischem Gebiete (Syrisch und Arabisch) geleistet.
