  • Biographical Presentation

    E. studierte Komposition auf dem Leipziger Konservatorium, danach privat bei H. von Herzogenberg, der ihn an die Musikhochschule Berlin mitnahm, an der E. 1886/87 seine Lehre beendete. Von da an veröffentlichte er Kompositionen, unter denen seine von Wagner und H. Wolf ausgehenden, stilistisch an den jungen R. Strauß erinnernden Lieder volkstümlicher, epischer und dramatischer Art besonderen wie berechtigten Erfolg errangen. E. wirkte auch als beliebter Pädagoge für Theorie und Komposition, privat sowie 1902-07 an der Berliner Hochschule. Beachtung fand ferner seine Neugestaltung von R. von Liliencrons Chorordnung für die evangelische Landeskirche (324 a-cappella-Chöre mit zahlreichen Sätzen E.s, 4 Bände, 1902-06, Neuausgabe 1928 folgende).
