  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach dem Medizinstudium in Heidelberg, Leipzig, Berlin, Straßburg und praktischer ärztlicher Tätigkeit in Berlin ging E. 1879 nach Kairo, wo er 1880 zum ärztlichen Inspekteur des Schwefelbades und Luftkurortes Heluan ernannt wurde. Nach 1884 ordnete E. die ägyptische Sanitätsstatistik neu und veranlaßte 1890 eine offizielle Zählung der Leprakranken in Ägypten. Er richtete eine private Poliklinik für Lepröse ein. Auf sein Betreiben stellten die Chemiker Hoffmann und Taub von den Elberfelder Farbwerken 1906 den Äthylester des Chaulmoograöls als reines Präparat dar. E. führte dieses besser verträgliche und auch parenteral anwendbare „Antileprol“ 1907 in die Therapie des Aussatzes ein, die damit auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt und später von Muir, Lara, Rodriguez und anderen ausgebaut wurde. 1890 wurde E. der Rang eines Bey, später der deutsche Professortitel verliehen. Sein Plan eines staatlichen Leprahospitals in Ägypten gelangte erst 1929 zur Ausführung.
