Biographical Presentation
E., seit 1696 Schüler des Johann Heiß in Augsburg, hielt sich 1703-06 in Venedig, Livorno, Loreto sowie bei Carlo Maratti in Rom auf. Bis 1711 war er mit Johann Kupetzki zusammen als Bildnismaler in Wien tätig. 1711 wurde er in Augsburg ansässig und erwarb hier 1713 das Meisterrecht. Gelegentlich auch vom württembergischen Hof herangezogen, wurde er 1743 evangelischer Direktor der Augsburger Kunstakademie. – In der deutschen Kunstgeschichte des 18. Jahrhunderts kann E. als gut charakterisierender Bildnismaler, im besonderen des Patriziats und der Geistlichkeit des evangelischen Augsburg, einen beachtenswerten Platz einnehmen.
