  • Biographical Presentation

    Die jüd. Familie stammt ab von dem Flußschiffer David Lewin Wehle in Wehlau am Pregel (Ostpreußen). Seine Urenkel in Königsberg, darunter August (s. 1), traten nach dem preuß. Judenedikt von 1812 zum ev. Glauben über und nahmen den Namen „Lewald“ an. Zu ihr gehört (als Vetter von August) →Friedrich (1794–1858), Stadtverordneter in Breslau, Wirtschaftspolitiker und Statistiker, redigierte 1836-42 die „Schles. Chronik“ als Beiblatt der Breslauer Zeitung, wurde 1841 Verwaltungsdirektor der von ihm gegründeten Oberschles. Eisenbahngesellschaft und leitete sie bis zur Überführung in Staatsbesitz 1859 (s. L).
