  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach dem Schulbesuch in Nürnberg studierte S. seit 1950 Petrographie an der Univ. München (Dipl.-Geologe 1955) und wurde 1957 bei Georg Fischer mit einer Arbeit über das Moldanubikum um Vilshofen in Niederbayern promoviert. 1957-61 wandte sich S. als Postdoktorand am Geophysical Laboratory der Carnegie Institution (Washington, D. C.) experimentellen Arbeiten zu. 1962-65 Assistent an der Univ. Kiel, habilitierte er sich 1963 für das Fach Mineralogie (Synthese, Stabilität u. Vorkommen d. Minerals Cordierit). 1966 wurde S. o. Professor für Mineralogie und Petrologie an der Univ. Bochum,|wo er über seine Emeritierung 1996 hinaus wissenschaftlich aktiv blieb.

    S. begann mit Arbeiten zur Petrographie kristalliner Gesteine Bayerns. In den USA verband er die Naturbeobachtung mit quantitativer physikochemischer Forschung und führte diesen Ansatz in Deutschland ein. Im Fokus standen wichtige Mineralgruppen wie Cordierit, Chlorit, Granat, Glimmer, Borminerale, aber auch seltenere, in genetischer Hinsicht aussagekräftige Minerale wie Sapphirin, Kornerupin und Osumilit. Mit Hilfe ihrer Stabilitätsbeziehungen konnte S. die Bildungsbedingungen metamorpher Gesteine eingrenzen. Viele von ihm neu synthetisierte Minerale wie Magnesium-Staurolith, borfreier Kornerupin oder Mineralvergesellschaftungen wie Talk-Disthen wurden später in der Natur entdeckt. Mit dem Nachweis, daß Krusten-Gesteine in Tiefen von mehr als 30 km überpragt und dann wieder an die Oberfläche transportiert werden, begründete S. das Gebiet der Ultrahochdruckmetamorphose, das neue Einblicke in die Dynamik der Plattenbewegung und Gebirgsbildung erlaubte. Inzwischen wurde dieser Prozeß an vielen Stellen der Erde nachgewiesen, bis zu Tiefen im Diamantstabilitätsfeld um 140 km. S. war auch ein sehr erfolgreicher akademischer Lehrer. Zu seinen Schülern zählen u. a. Peter Blümel, Volker Schenck und Friedrich Seifert.
