Born in Dudelange, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, her political career began as a Member of Parliament in 1979, and she later became the first women president of Luxembourg's Parliament. She served as a government minister in many different sectors: Culture, Religions, Education, Higher Education, Research and Public Works. In 2004 she became a member of the European Parliament, where she was appointed Rapporteur of the "European Year of Intercultural Dialogue"
