Biographical Presentation
Mantel: Johann M., Genosse der Reformatoren. Geboren in Nürnberg ca. 1468, gebildet zu Ingolstadt und Tübingen, 1500 Prior des Augustinerklosters in seiner Vaterstadt, 1503 als Lehrer der Theologie nach Wittenberg berufen, wurde M. 1520 Prediger zu St. Leonhard in Stuttgart. Die österreichische Regierung, welche den Herzog Ulrich vertrieben hatte, warf M. Aufreizung des Volks durch die an Luther, Karlstadt u. A. erinnernde Hinweisung auf das israelitische Jubeljahr vor und kerkerte ihn auf Hohen-Nagold ein. Nicht Luther's, der Züricher und Eßlingen's Verwendung, erst die Führer des Bauernkriegs befreiten ihn 1525. In Baden und Hessen vorübergehend angestellt, im Nachtmahlsstreit auf der Seite Zwingli's, fand er in der Schweiz Ruhe, starb aber schon 1530 als Pfarrer zu Elgg im Kanton Zürich.
