  • Biographical Presentation

    Seit 1487 ist E. als Buchdrucker in Venedig nachweisbar, zunächst (seit 1487) gemeinsam mit Johann Hamann (genannt Hertzog) aus Speyer, seit 1492 selbständig. Er druckte vor allem liturgische Werke für den bedeutenden Verleger Lucantonio Giunta, arbeitete aber auch für andere, wie Nicolaus von Frankfurt, Johann Paep in Ofen und eine Sevillaner Gesellschaft; noch 1506 druckte er ein Missale für Mallorca. „Seine Missale und Breviere sind wohl die vollkommensten, die Venedig hervorgebracht hat“ (Haebler). Er druckte nur mit gotischen Typen, besaß zahlreiche Alphabete in den verschiedensten Graden, originelle Initialen und gute Holzschnitte und stellte sowohl das größte (ein Graduale von 1499) wie das kleinste Buch (Officium B.V.M. vom 21.5.1499 – Hain 11996) des 15. Jahrhunderts her. Außer seiner eigenen Druckermarke (in drei|Größen) zeigen seine Drucke häufig die Verlegermarke des L. Giunta und viel Rotdruck.
