  • Biographical Presentation

    B. besuchte das Gymnasium in Schulpforta, studierte seit 1730 in Leipzig Theologie und Mathematik (u. a. bei →J. A. Ernesti) und ging dann zu Ch. von Wolff nach Marburg; 1734 wurde er in Leipzig Magister Artium, 1737 Magister Philosophiae und 1745 Professor für Mathematik in Wittenberg, gleichzeitig Mitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft in Leipzig. - B.s Verdienst liegt besonders auf dem Gebiet der Algebra: Erster allgemeiner Beweis für die von Newton aufgestellten Formeln der Potenzsummen der Gleichungswurzeln; ferner ist hervorzuheben seine gute und vollständige Euklidausgabe (Elementorum Euclidis libri XV ad Graeci contextus fidem recensiti et ad usum tironum accomodati, Leipzig 1744).
