  • Biographical Presentation

    A. stand 1894-1901 als Pfarrer in Lingolsheim im Kirchendienst und übernahm anschließend die Leitung des Theologischen Studienstiftes in Straßburg, wo er sich schon 1894 für Kirchengeschichte habilitiert hatte. 1900 wurde er zum außerordentlichen und 1914 zum oredentlichen Professor ernannt. Als solcher wirkte A. seit 1919 in Bonn, seit 1924 in Tübingen. 1924-30 war er Vorsitzender des Wissenschaftlichen Instituts der Elsaß-Lothringer im Reich an der Universität Frankfurt/Main. Als Forscher hat sich A. vorwiegend mit der alten Kirchengeschichte im Zusammenhang mit dem antiken Mysterienwesen sowie mit der Entstehung des Heiligenkultes befaßt. Daneben trat, wie zahlreiche Studien zeigen, die zunehmende Beschäftigung mit der Reformationsgeschichte seiner elsäss. Heimat, insbesondere mit dem Straßburger Reformator →Martin Bucer. Die Geschichte der Universität Straßburg von 1872-1918 blieb unvollendet.
