Biographical Presentation
Baumer: Joh. Wilh. B., Arzt und Mineralog, geb. am 10. Sept. 1719 zu Rehweiler, gest. als Professor d. Medic. Bergrath und Landphysicus am 4. Aug. 1788 zu Gießen. B. studirte in Halle Medicin, erlangte daselbst die Doctorwürde und ließ sich als Arzt in Erfurt nieder. Hier wurde er 1754 zum Professor der Physik ernannt, 1764 als Professor der Medicin nach Gießen berufen, und im folgenden Jahre zum Bergrath und Landphysicus ernannt. Als Polyhistor war B. auf sehr verschiedenen Gebieten menschlichen Wissens, besonders aber des medicin. Fachs thätig (Philolog. Philosoph; Anat. Physiol. prakt. Med. Balnealog. Med. forensis) ohne jedoch auf irgend einem dieser Gebiete hervorragendes zu leisten. Dagegen wird sein Name neben dem von Pott, Henkel, Cronstedt u. A. in der Mineralogie rühmlich unter denjenigen genannt, welche die Classification der Mineralien nach den innern (chemisch-physik.) Eigenschaften mit Erfolg vertheidigten. Außer einer großen Anzahl kleiner Schriften und Aufsätze verschiedenen Inhalts machen sich bemerkbar: „Naturgeschichte des Mineralreichs“, Gotha 1763; „Hist. nat. lapid. pret.", Francof. 1771; „Fundam. geogn. et hydragr.“, Giesen 1779; „Hist. nat. regn. min.“, Francof. 1780.|
