    Leclere: David L., geb. 1680 in Bern, † 1738 in Frankfurt. In seiner Vaterstadt zum Maler gebildet, kam er 1698 nach Frankfurt a M., wo er durch seine Vielseitigkeit Auffehen erregte, indem er Oel-, Miniatur- und Schmelzfarben mit gleicher Geschicklichkeit zu behandeln wußte. Die Landgrafen Ernst Ludwig von Darmstadt und Karl von Kassel beschäftigten ihn; der letztere ließ den Künstler nach Paris reisen. Von da heimgekehrt, arbeitete L., mit Ausnahme eines zweijährigen Aufenthalts in London 1715—17, bis an sein Ende als Porträtmaler in Frankfurt. Mehrere seiner Bildnisse wurden gestochen.
