  • Biographical Presentation

    Westfälischer Uradel aus Gahlen an der Lippe, Reichsfreiherrnstand 1665, preußischer Grafenstand 1803. Der gleichen Familie gehören an: Christoph Bernhard († 1678), Bischof von Münster (s. NDB III), →Heinrich († 1557), Landmarschall seit 1535, Meister des Deutschordens in Livland seit 1551, unter ihm tobte die Koadjutorenfehde und wurde 1554 gegen seinen Willen der verhängnisvolle Vertrag von Nowgorod mit dem Zaren abgeschlossen. Weitere Mitglieder dienten dem Orden als Heerführer. →Johann (1604–53) war Admiral der Generalstaaten.
