  • Biographical Presentation

    F. blieb 1714, als sein Großvater Georg I. König von Großbritannien wurde, im Alter von 7 Jahren als einziges Mitglied der königlichen Familie in Hannover. Bei Empfängen und Levers repräsentierte er gelegentlich die Familie des Herrschers. Regierungsfunktionen übte er nicht aus. Georg I. plante, ihn mit seiner Cousine Wilhelmine von Preußen (1731 Markgräfin von Bayreuth) und seine Schwester Amelia mit dem Kronprinzen Friedrich (Friedrich dem Großen) zu vermählen. Nach Georgs Tode (1727) scheiterte dieser Plan der „englischen Doppelhochzeit“ an den beiden Königen (Georg II. und Friedrich Wilhelm I.). F. kam 1728 nach England. Aus persönlichen Gründen trat er in Gegensatz zu seinem Vater und unterstützte die politische Opposition gegen dessen Minister Walpole. 1737 kam es zum offenen Bruch mit dem König, 1742 gelang es der Partei des Prinzen, Walpole zu stürzen, wovon er selbst keinen Nutzen hatte. Georg II. hielt ihn bis zu seinem Tode von allen verantwortlichen Stellen fern. Seine Bedeutung liegt in der Unterstützung der Oppositionspartei, wodurch er zum Mitbegründer der Tory-Partei, der späteren Konservativen, wurde und damit in der Neugründung des Zweiparteiensystems in Großbritannien. Seine Politik wurde nach 1760 von seinem Sohn, Georg III., fortgeführt.
