  • Biographical Presentation

    S. leitete 1936-38 die erste ausländ. Produktionsstätte der FAG, „Fischer Bearings Manufacturing Limited“ in Wolverhampton, war seit 1937 Geschäftsführender Gesellschafter von Kugelfischer und 1983-89 Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrats. Sein breites soziales und mäzenatisches Engagement fand Ausdruck in der nach seiner Mutter benannten Alwine-Schäfer-Kinderkrippe (1962), in der Alwine-Schäfer-Gedächtnisstiftung (1972) und der Dr. Otto-Schäfer-Stiftung e. V. (1989), der er seine Büchersammlungen übertrug, die nach Umfang und Rang eine der bedeutendsten europ. Privatbibliotheken darstellen (Illustrata, dt. Lit. in Erstausgg., Einbände). Die Eröffnung der „Bibliothek Otto Schäfer – Museum für Buchdruck, Graphik, Kunsthandwerk“, in der auch die private Graphiksammlung Ottos mit dem nahezu vollständigen druckgraphischen Werk Albrecht Dürers verwahrt wird, erfolgte 1991.|
