  • Biographical Presentation

    An der Domschule zu Eichstätt erzogen, wurde G. Mitglied des Domkapitels und um 1045 Kaplan der Kaiserin Agnes. Auf deren Betreiben erhielt er 1057 das Bistum Eichstätt. Als Reformbischof führte G. die seelsorgerliche und liturgische Erneuerung seines Sprengels, unbekümmert um die Reichspolitik, mit großer Ausdauer durch. Er wandte seine Aufmerksamkeit der Wendenmission im Norden seines Gebietes zu, konsekrierte 126 Kirchen und kodifizierte den Eichstätter Ritus in dem von ihm 1071/72 angelegten Liber Pontificalis, in welchem nach seinem Tod die Biographien der Eichstätter Bischöfe bis 1697 und deren „Porträts“ in Miniaturmalereien bis 1535 fortgeführt wurden. G.s vertrautester Freund war der Eichstätter Geschichtsschreiber, der sogenannte Anonymus Haserensis (Hasenried = Herrieden), der vielleicht mit dem Herriedener Propst Heysso identisch ist.
