    Erythräus: Valentin E., Philolog und Schulmann, geb. zu Lindau 1521, gest. am 29. März 1576. Vorgebildet auf der Lateinschule seiner Vaterstadt, studirte er erst drei Jahre in Straßburg, dann in Wittenberg, wo er Luther und Melanchthon hörte und sich ihr besonderes Vertrauen erwarb. Dort erhielt er von seinem früheren Lehrer, dem berühmten Humanisten Johann Sturm, einen Ruf nach Straßburg, wo er bald zum Professor der Rhetorik an der Akademie befördert wurde, in welcher Stellung er 29 Jahre verblieb und einen bedeutenden Ruf als Lehrer erwarb. Als im J. 1575 das Gymnasium von Nürnberg nach Altdorf verlegt wurde, folgte er einem Rufe an das neu errichtete Gymnasium als Rector, das er mit einer Rede eröffnete; aber bereits nach neun Monaten wurde er seiner neuen Wirksamkeit durch frühen Tod entrissen. Seine jetzt antiquirten Schriften sind fast ausschließlich rhetorische: „LibriIV de grammaticorum figuris“, 1549 u. ö.; „Tabulae partitionum oratoriarum Ciceronis et IV dialogorum Jo. Sturmii in easdem etc.“, 1560 u. ö.; „De usu decem categoriarum in simplici quaestione de eas ducenda etc.", 1566; „De elocutione libri III“, 1567; „De ratione legendi et scribendi epistolas libri III“. 1573; „Μιϰϱοτέχνη seu medulla Rhetoricae Tullianae“, 1575. Seine Beschreibung einer Promotion von drei Doctoren in Straßburg, wobei E. als Decan eine „Oratio de honoribus academicis“ hielt (Argentorati 1574, 143 pp. 4.), ist ein für das feierliche und umständliche Promotionswesen der damaligen Zeit höchst interessantes Document.
