  • Biographical Presentation

    H. studierte 1836-40 Medizin in Königsberg, hatte jedoch schon früh ausgeprägte, durch seinen Lehrer M. H. Rathke geförderte naturwissenschaftliche Interessen, vor allem für Entomologie (Promotion 1840 in Königsberg, Dissertation: Synonymia Libellularum Europaearum). 1842-43 setzte er die medizinischen Studien im Ausland fort. Seit 1843 war er Arzt in Königsberg. In diese Zeit fällt seine wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit auf entomologischem Gebiet. Vor allem sind seine systematischen Arbeiten über die Insektenordnung der Neuroptera (im Sinne Linnés) hervorzuheben, unter anderem die „Monographie der Termiten“ (1855-60) und die „Synopsis of the Neuroptera of North America“ (Washington 1861). Er wurde bekannt durch seine entomologische Spezialbibliographie „Bibliotheca Entomologica“ (1862/63) und hatte Verbindung zu anderen namhaften Entomologen wie Carl August Dohrn und M. E. de Selys-Longchamps.

    H.s Bemühungen, am Berliner zoologischen Museum eine Anstellung zu erhalten, schlugen fehl, auch hatte er als Arzt geringes Einkommen. Er nahm deshalb 1867 das Angebot von L. Agassiz an, als Entomologe am Museum of comparative Zoology in Cambridge (Mass.) zu arbeiten. Dort bemühte er sich um Aufbau und Ordnung der entomologischen Sammlung und um die Ausbildung amerikanischer Entomologen und gewann so Einfluß auf die Entwicklung dieses Faches in Amerika. 1870 wurde er Professor der Entomologie der Universität Cambridge (Mass.).
