  • Biographical Presentation

    B. erwarb sich schon als Schüler autodidaktisch seine floristischen Kenntnisse. Anfang der 80er Jahre besuchte er die Gärtnerlehranstalt in Potsdam. Eine ansehnliche Erbschaft nach dem Tode des Vaters ermöglichte ihm in der Folge die Finanzierung seiner Forschungsreisen (davon 16 nach dem Orient). 1887/88 wurde B. Inspektor des Botanischen Gartens in Belgrad. Seither stand er mit C. Hausknecht in Verbindung und leitete als dessen Nachfolger 1903-38 das nach der Sammlung Boissier bedeutendste Orientherbar in Weimar, das er beträchtlich erweiterte. 1902 bestieg er als erster den Demavend in Persien. Er war 1913 Gast der russischen Fedschenko-Expedition nach Ostturkistan. Im Regierungsauftrag arbeitete er 1917/18 im besetzten Mazedonien. Seine Sammlungen gingen 1939 durch Verkauf an das Botan. Museum Berlin-Dahlem über und wurden z. T. 1942 vernichtet. - Professortitel 1918, Dr. h. c. Jena, Ehrenmitglied u. a. der Turkistanischen Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft Taschkent (1926).
