  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte Naturwissenschaften in Bonn und Gießen und war eine Zeitlang auf Empfehlung von J. Liebig am Royal College of Chemistry in London tätig. 1846 promovierte er in Gießen zum Dr. phil. Wahrscheinlich seit 1852 mit Versuchen beschäftigt, statt des teuren englischen Portlandzements einen solchen aus heimischen Stoffen herzustellen, gründete er 1853 die erste deutsche|Portlandzement-Fabrik in Züllchow nahe Stettin. 1856 regte er den Bau eines solchen Werkes in Oberkassel an, das er als Generaldirektor leitete. Nach einer Reise in das sächsische Braunkohlengebiet erwarb B. Grubenfelder links des Rheins und versuchte mit Erfolg, die Kohle zu brikettieren. Er gründete die Braunkohlengewerkschaft „B.“ und entwarf mit H. Gruhl, Halle, Pläne für die Ausbeutung seiner Besitzungen und die Errichtung einer Brikettfabrik.
