  • Biographical Presentation

    P. verbrachte drei Jahre an der Klosterschule Dondorf (Thüringen) und legte das Abitur am Münchner Maximilians-Gymnasium ab. Nach dem Wehrdienst als Einjährig-Freiwilliger bei der Feldartillerie studierte er in München Chemie bei →Adolf v. Baeyer und in Würzburg bei →Emil Fischer (1852–1919), wo er 1890 mit einer Arbeit „Über Reduktion der Zuckersäure“ promoviert wurde. Anschließend begleitete er Fischer als Assistent nach Berlin und leitete die anorganische Abteilung des chemischen Laboratoriums. P. forschte auf dem Gebiet der organischen Chemie und fand bei Untersuchungen zur Reihe der Nitrosoverbindungen, mit der er sich 1898 habilitierte, eine elegante Glycerinsynthese. 1900 folgte P. einem Ruf als ao. Professor für anorganische Chemie nach München, an das von Baeyer geleitete Institut und verzichtete auf eine erfolgversprechendere Karriere in Berlin, In München studierte er den roten Blutfarbstoff bzw. dessen farbgebende Komponente und identifizierte dabei eine Reihe von Pyrrolderivaten. Seine Arbeiten waren wichtige Schritte auf dem Weg zur Konstitutionsermittlung des Porphins und des Hämins. Angesteckt von der allgemeinen Begeisterung, meldete sich P. 1914 an die Front, obwohl er das kriegsdienstpflichtige Alter schon überschritten hatte, und fand dort den Tod. P. war ein ausgezeichneter Experimentalchemiker; zu seinen Schülern gehörten →Otto Ruff (1871–1939), →Wilhelm Schlenk (1879–1943) und →Alfred Stock (1876–1946).
