  • Biographical Presentation

    L. studierte roman. und engl. Philologie in Berlin bei →Brandl, →Dibelius, →Schultz-Gora und →A. Tobler. Er promovierte 1905 bei →Tobler mit einer Dissertation über „Das altprovenzal. Kreuzlied“. Anschließend ging er in den Schuldienst in Berlin, bis er unter dem nationalsozialistischen Regime entlassen wurde. Von der Mitte der 20er Jahre an hatte er einen Lehrauftrag für Altfranzösisch und Altprovenzalisch an der Univ. Berlin. 1941 verließ er Deutschland und gelangte über Sibirien nach den Vereinigten Staaten, wo er in New York eine Stelle in einem Anwaltsbüro fand. Er erhielt an der Columbia University einen Lehrauftrag für Altprovenzalisch. Um die Gougenheim Fellowship bewarb er sich vergeblich. Die Hochschullaufbahn hat L. nie angestrebt. Seine Tätigkeit als Romanist galt seit seiner Promotion ausschließlich der altprovenzal. Troubadourdichtung. Hierin erwies er sich bald als ein unübertrefflicher Kenner. Seine zahlreichen, teils sehr umfangreichen Artikel zur Textinterpretation, zum Wortschatz und zur Syntax machten ihn zu einer internationalen Autorität. Grundlegend sind seine Beiträge zur Textkritik des|Daude de Pradas, Cerveri de Gerona, Peire Roman de Tolosa sowie zu den Versromanen Jaufre und Flamenca.
