Biographical Presentation
Westfälisches Adelsgeschlecht, zubenannt nach dem Erbgut Löringhof bei Recklinghausen (seit 1421 in Familienbesitz). Seit dem 14. Jahrhundert sind Angehörige des Geschlechts als Ordensritter in Livland nachweisbar, seit dem 15. Jahrhundert auch als Laien. Deutschordensmeister war seit 1485 Johann Fridach von dem Löringhove († 1494). Zur Familie gehören auch: → Karl Johann Freytag von Loringhoven (1744–1810), russischer Generalleutnant, → Wilhelm von Freytag (1720–98), braunschweig-lüneburgischer Feldmarschall (s. ADB VII), → August Freiherr von Frydag (1840–1922), oldenburgischer Oberhofmeister, Hugo Freiherr von F. (1855-1924), General der Infanterie, Dr. phil. h. c, Militärschriftsteller und Mitglied der Studienkommission des Reichsarchivs (s. Wi. 1922), und Mathilde Freiin von F. (1860-1941), Malerin (s. Vollmer).
