  • Biographical Presentation

    C. studierte in Heidelberg, Bonn und Königsberg Chemie. Nach der Habilitation (1880) wirkte er 1894-97 als Professor in Königsberg. 1897/98 war er Professor in München, anschließend als Privatgelehrter und 1902-09 wiederum in Königsberg als Professor tätig. Danach leitete er verschiedene chemische Fabriken.

    C. arbeitete erfolgreich im Gebiete der reinen und angewandten organischen Chemie, besonders über Weinsäureester, Cholalsäure, Vorkommen von Myristinsäure in Rindergalle, Elektrolyse organischer Kalisalze, Margarine und Verwertung der Abwässer der Sulfitzellulose-Fabriken. Er erfand ein verbessertes Nitrometer (1901), einen an Glasapparate anschmelzbaren Hahn für alkalische Flüssigkeiten (1903) und ein neues Gärungssaccharometer (1922). C. verstand es, chemische Fragen volkstümlich darzustellen. Von seinen zahlreichen Büchern fanden einige sehr weite Verbreitung.
