  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach dem Studium der neueren Sprachen und der Germanistik in Erlangen, Berlin und München trat G. 1899 als Volontär in die Hof- und Staatsbibliothek in München ein, wurde dort 1901 Assistent, 1904 Sekretär, 1909 Kustos und 1911 Bibliothekar. In der Handschriftenabteilung tätig, war er auch Mitarbeiter an den „Mittelalterlichen Bibliothekskatalogen“, später auch an den „Seltenheiten aus süddeutschen Bibliotheken“; er baute die Einbandsammlung und 1914-18 die Kriegssammlung auf und veröffentlichte zahlreiche richtungweisende Aufsätze aus seinen Arbeits- und Forschungsgebieten. 1921 nach Leipzig als Direktor der Universitätsbibliothek berufen, wurde er dort auch ordentlicher Honorarprofessor für Bibliothekswissenschaft und Vorsitzender des Sächsischen Prüfungsamtes für Bibliothekswesen. Obwohl die notwendige Modernisierung der Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, die Ausbildung des bibliothekarischen Nachwuchses, Kurse und Vorlesungen seine Arbeitskraft fast restlos in Anspruch nahmen, setzte er doch seine wissenschaftliche Forschungs- und Editionstätigkeit in vorbildlicher Weise fort (auch Mitarbeiter an F. Milkaus „Handbuch der Bibliothekswissenschaft“). 1937 trat er in den Ruhestand.|
