Biographical Presentation
C. studierte in Berlin (Promotion 1842, Rabbinerdiplom 1843) und wirkte dort bis zu seinem Tode. Die Früchte seiner pädagogischen Erfahrung als Leiter der „Dina-Nauenschen Erziehungsanstalt“ für Waisenkinder (1846–79) und als Lehrer an jüdischen Schulen (1850–1873) und am jüdischen Lehrerseminar (seit 1858) waren verbreitete Lehrbücher. Seine vielseitigen historischen Arbeiten über das Alte Testament und jüdische Literatur, die auch Texteditionen umfaßten, trugen zum Aufblühen der kritischen jüdischen Wissenschaft bei und wurden 1872 durch seine Berufung an die „Hochschule (später Lehranstalt) für die Wissenschaft des Judentums“ anerkannt.
