  • Biographical Presentation

    A. studierte in Heidelberg und Berlin, wo er 1885 promovierte, wurde Assistent bei A. W. von Hoffmann in Berlin und Victor Meyer in Göttingen und Heidelberg, 1890 Privatdozent Heidelberg, 1894 außerordentlicher Professor, 1900 Direktor des Chemischen Instituts Greifswald, 1913-28 Direktor des Chemischen Instituts Marburg, Geheimer Regierungsrat, Vizepräsident und langjähriges Vorstandsmitglied der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft. - A. beschäftigte sich besonders mit stereochemischen Problemen, mit Spektrochemie organischer Verbindungen und Konstitutionsbestimmungen durch Molekularrefraktion und Molekulardispersion. Er ist einer der letzten Vertreter der von A. von Kekulé eingeleiteten Periode der klassischen Strukturchemie. Zwischen 1884 und 1938 schrieb er über 500 Abhandlungen.
