  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte in Berlin Naturwissenschaften, vor allem Mineralogie und Physik, promovierte 1911 bei Th. Liebisch mit einer kristalloptischen Arbeit. 1912 trat er in den Dienst der Firma E. Leitz, Optische Werke, Wetzlar, wo er 37 Jahre lang als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter tätig war. Hier wurde er der Schöpfer zahlreicher heute führender optischer, insbesondere auch mineralogischer Instrumente sowie u. a. der gesamten Leica-Optik; für letztere erteilte ihm die Pariser Weltausstellung 1938 einen persönlichen Grand Prix. Zugleich hat B. bahnbrechende theoretischoptische Arbeit, vorwiegend im Gebiet der Abbildung sowie der Mikroskopie im polarisierten Auflicht, geleistet. 1925 Honorarprofessor in Marburg, 1949 Dr. rer. nat. h. c. in Gießen.
