    Adelsgeschlecht aus Mecklenburg, das sich im 17. Jh. auch nach Holstein und Dänemark sowie in die Alt- und Neumark ausbreitete und großen Güterbesitz erwarb. In Dänemark wurden →Hans Friedrich v. Levezau (1636–96) und dessen Nachkommen →Theodosius (1665–1719) und Christian (dän. Gf. 1751, 1682-1756) Generalleutnants. →Joachim v. Levetzau (1782–1859) war dän. Oberhofmarschall, Chef des kgl. Theaters, der Gärten, der Museen und der Gemäldegalerie (alle s. Dansk Leks. 14). Ferner gehören zur Familie: →Albert (1827–1903), preuß. Wirkl. Geh. Rat, Mitglied des Staatsrats und des Reichstags (Fraktionsvorsitzender der Konservativen Partei, Präsident 1881-84 und 1888-95), Kanzler des Johanniterordens (s. BJ VIII), →Theodor (1843–1902), Kapitän zur See, Reichskommissar für das Auswanderungswesen, →Joachim (1859–1933), oldenburg. Landtagsabgeordneter, stellv. Vorsitzender des Bundes der Landwirte, und →Carl Michael Frhr. (1871–1945), Schriftsteller (s. ÖBL).
