  • Biographical Presentation

    F. studierte in Wien Medizin, promovierte 1879 zum Dr. med., ging dann aber zur Kunstwissenschaft und besonders zur Beethovenforschung über. Er unternahm ausgedehnte Kunstreisen nach Deutschland, Italien, Frankriech, Belgien und Holland. Vom Herbst 1881 bis Mai 1883 war er am Österreichischen Museum für Kunst und Industrie tätig, 1884-93 war er Kustos-Adjunkt am Wiener Hofmuseum. Später wirkte er als Direktor der Gräflich Schönborn-Wiesentheidschen-Galerie in Wien, daneben als Dozent am Wiener Athenäum. – F.s Leistung liegt besonders auf dein Gebiet der Beethovenforschung, hier aber weniger in einer Gesamtdarstellung als in einer Fülle wertvoller Einzeluntersuchungen, deren Ergebnisse er in seinem Beethoven-Handbuch (2 Bände, 1926) zusammenfaßte.
