  • Biographical Presentation

    C. studierte in Würzburg und Heidelberg und ließ sich als Advokat in Sankt Gallen nieder. Er war 1835-39 Mitglied des Großen Rates in Sankt Gallen, 1839-59 Regierungsrat, wurde 1851 Ständerat und war 1859-66 Nationalrat. Als liberaler Katholik war er Gegner des Ultramontanismus (Aufhebung des Klosters Pfävers und Gründung einer Irrenanstalt; Errichtung des Bistums Sankt Gallen). Er beteiligte sich an der fortschrittlich demokratischen Ausgestaltung der kantonalen Gesetzgebung und Verwaltung (Zivilprozeßordnung, Strafgesetzbuch und andere) und war ein Vorkämpfer des schweizerischen Bundesstaats von 1848. Als grundsatzfeste Persönlichkeit und hinreißender Redner stand er in großem Ansehen.
