  • Biographical Presentation

    1844-47 studierte C. in Erlangen und nach dem 1847 bestandenen 1. theologischen Examen noch ein Jahr in Berlin. 1849/50 war er Vikar in Kaiserslautern, 1851-59 Pfarrer in Freckenfeld und 1859-63 zweiter Pfarrer in Speyer, wo er bald zu kränkeln anfing.

    Für seine wissenschaftliche Entwicklung war vor allem die Studienzeit in Erlangen wichtig, wo er - von den theologischen Größen wenig beeindruckt - in den Bannkreis des von J. Böhme und J. Baader beeinflußten Philosophen und Theosophen E. A. von Schaden geriet. Aus dieser Begegnung entstand dann in C.s letzten Lebensjahren seine „Christliche Ethik“ (1864, ⁶1929), die völlig auf der Idee der Gottesebenbildlichkeit des Menschen aufgebaut ist. C., der nur Schrifttheologe sein will, bringt eine eigenartige und oft faszinierende Verbindung biblisch-evangelischer, theosophisch-katholischer und philosophischer Elemente zustande. Sein Werk fand besonders in der Zeit nach dem 1. Weltkriege starke Beachtung.
