  • Biographical Presentation

    In sozinianischer und zum Teil auch remonstrantischer Tradition aufgewachsen (er besuchte das Seminar der Remonstranten in Amsterdam), wirkte C. zunächst als Prediger in den kleinen sozinianischen Gemeinden der Mark Brandenburg und Schlesiens (am längsten in Königswalde bei Frankfurt/Oder), eine Zeitlang auch als deren Vorsteher. Nach mehrfachen Reisen unter anderem nach Holland und England ließ er sich 1727 als theologischer Schriftsteller in Amsterdam nieder. In seiner Theologie war C. gegenüber dem traditionellen Sozinianismus, nicht zuletzt auf Grund remonstrantischer Einflüsse, sehr selbständig. Er bekämpfte wie dieser die „platonische“ Logos- und Trinitätslehre und vertrat eine adoptianische Christologie (daher in Anknüpfung an den altkirchlichen adoptianischen Monarchianer sein Pseudonym Artemonius), bildete aber eine zwischen Sozinianismus und Orthodoxie vermittelnde Lehre vom|Versöhnungsopfer Christi aus. Vom Rüdegang auf die allein geistgewirkten Aussagen der Bibel unter Beiseitesetzung der späteren Dogmen erhoffte er die Überwindung der Parteiungen der Christen einschließlich des Sozinianismus.
