  • Biographical Presentation

    A. war zuerst Ingenieur, wurde dann Journalist und leitete bis 1883 die „Konstanzer Zeitung“, deren Eigentümer er wurde. Von da ab wirkte er als Privatgelehrter auf dem Gebiete der Anthropologie. Er nahm – 1885 bis 1899 als führendes Mitglied der anthropologischen Kommission des Karlsruher Altertumsvereins – die anthropologische Aufnahme der Wehrpflichtigen und der Mittelschüler in Baden vor und schuf damit die erste Anthropologie eines größeren deutschen Landes. Zugleich war er einer der ersten, die sich auf dem Gebiete der Sozialanthropologie betätigten. A. war Dr. med. h. c. und korrespondierendes Mitglied mehrerer ausländischer anthropologischer Gesellschaften.
