Biographical Presentation
Strauch: Georg Wilhelm St., Mathematiker, geboren am 5. Juni 1811 in Heppenheim in Hessen, † 1868. Er war Lehrer der Mathematik und Physik an der Bezirksschule zu Muri im Kanton Aargau. Strauch's wichtigste litterarische Leistung ist sein zweibändiges „Lehrbuch der Variationsrechnung“ (Zürich 1849), welches das erste eigentliche Lehrbuch dieser Disciplin darstellt. Besonders verdienstlich sind in dem II. Bande die zahlreichen Beispiele, wenn auch die breite und doch nicht immer durchsichtige Schreibart Strauch's das Lesen einigermaßen erschwert. Die gleichen Vorzüge und Mängel treten in einem späteren Werke hervor, von welchem nur ein erster Band erschienen ist: „Praktische Anwendungen für die Integration der totalen und partialen Differentialgleichungen“ (Braunschweig 1865).
