Biographical Presentation
Steffan: Matthäus St. aus Rottenburg a. Neckar, katholischer Dramatiker des 16. Jahrhunderts. Er führte „vff Sambstag der Verkündigung Mariä“ (25. März) 1589 zu Ueberlingen am Bodensee seine handschriftlich noch erhaltene „Tragödie von der Märtirin Felicitas“ auf. Die bekannte Legende (Acta sanctorum) 10. Juli) ist darin recht steif und unlebendig, ohne Leidenschaft, Steigerung und Abwechselung dargestellt. Die drei Acte sind durch musikalische Vorträge (Organist, Aufblasen, Cantores) von einander geschieden, die Reimbrechung wird durchweg beobachtet; als Quellen für die Chronologie citirt St. Hermannus Contractus und Johannes Funccius.
