    Schmidt: Matthias S., Maler und Radirer, geboren 1749 zu Mannheim, lernte an der Akademie daselbst, wo besonders Ferd. Kobell sich seiner annahm. Später ging S. nach München, wo Franz Kobell sein weiterer Lehrer wurde. S. wurde Director des Kupferstichcabinets zu Mannheim und kam mit der Sammlung nach München. Im J. 1808 gab man ihm an Franz Brulliot einen Assistenten, der sich aber mit S. schlecht vertrug. Im J. 1822 wurde S., der kein guter Vorstand seiner Sammlung gewesen war, pensionirt; er starb 1823. Zufolge Nagler dürften sich nur wenige Oelbilder von S. finden, nur Zeichnungen in Sepia und in anderer Art behandelt. S. ist hauptsächlich als Nachbildner bekannt, so fertigte er Copien nach J. Fyt, A. van de Velde, C. Dujardin, J. de Barbarj. Ferner veröffentlichte er: Suite d'Estampes d'après des dessins originaux à la plume de Ferd. Kobell et Rembrandt tirées de la Collection de S. M. le Roy des Bavières, Munic 1806.
