Biographical Presentation
Mestemaker: Gert M., ein Hamburger Schiffer, entdeckte 1572 das seit Bischof Adalbert's Zeiten verschollene Grönland aufs Neue. Er wurde absichtlich, es ist nicht gesagt von wem, zur Aufsuchung des Landes mit einem „Kraffel“ (caravelle) ausgesandt, fand auch das Land, aber keine Leute ("konde bi neen volk kamen"), und kam daher ohne Vortheil ("sunder baten") zurück. Möglich wäre, daß er nach Spitzbergen kam, das auch später öfter Grünland genannt wurde. — Lappenberg, Hamburgische Chroniken in niedersächsischer Sprache, S. 187. — Ein Andreas Meßmacher (= Mestemaker) kommt 1539 als Obrist plündernder Landsknechte im Lande Hadeln vor.
