  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach Studium in Berlin (Dr. phil. 1843) war B. zunächst weiter in Deutschland als Leiter der Privat-Sternwarte Bilk bei Düsseldorf (1847) und Assistent an der Berliner Sternwarte (1851) tätig, ging dann (1854) als Direktor und Professor an die Sternwarte Ann Arbor (Michigan, USA) und wurde 1865 „Astronomer Royal for Ireland“ und Direktor der Sternwarte Dunsink, bis er 1874 aus Gesundheitsrücksichten in den Ruhestand trat und nach kurzem Aufenthalt in der Schweiz endgültig nach Deutschland zurückkehrte. - B. war Schüler von →Johann Franz Encke und hervorragender Vertreter der klassischen Positionsastronomie, Verfasser zahlreicher Arbeiten über Kometen, Kleine Planeten und Fixsternparallaxen, vor allem aber eines noch heute geschätzten, ausführlichen Lehrbuchs der sphärischen Astronomie (1851), das zahlreiche Neuauflagen und Übersetzungen erlebte.
