    Vorher anscheinend Dienstmann →Heinrichs des Löwen, unternahm B. 1188/89 als Führer eines Konsortiums von Kaufleuten und Seefahrern im Einvernehmen mit Graf Adolf III. von Holstein die Gründung und den planmäßigen Aufbau der Hafenstadt (Neustadt) Hamburg an der Alster auf dem Platz der ihm und seinen Genossen überlassenen gräflichen Burg und wurde in den staufisch-welfischen Wirren der folgenden Jahre politischer Führer des sich bildenden Stadtrats.
