  • Biographical Presentation

    A. studierte in Greifswald und Göttingen orientalische Philologie, wurde Bibliothekar in Greifswald und 1861 Professor an der Universität, der er 1856 seine Schrift „Über Poesie und Poetik der Araber“ widmete. Er war ein stiller Gelehrter, der lieber in seiner Studierstube als im akademischen Unterricht tätig war, aber auch am politischen Geschehen seiner Stadt Anteil nahm, weltbekannt als einer der besten und gründlichsten Kenner der altarabischen Poesie, von der er große Teile mustergültig herausgab. Doch auch die übrige vielseitige und fast unübersehbare arabische Literatur beherrschte und bearbeitete er, wofür sein Verzeichnis der arabischen Handschriften der Königlichen Bibliothek Berlin (10 Bände, 1887–1899) ein unvergängliches Zeugnis ablegt.
