    Bion: Peter B., Handelsmann, Fabrikant und Kaufmann, † 1732. Angeblich aus einer französischen Résugiéfamilie abstammend, kam er im J. 1707 von Heidelberg nach St. Gallen, wurde am 10. Jan. 1717 in das dortige Bürgerrecht aufgenommen, richtete zuerst einen Laden ein, begann aber im J. 1721 auf eigene Rechnung halbleinenen und baumwollenen Barchent weben zu lassen und gab damit den ersten Anstoß zu der ganzen St. Gallisch-Appenzellischen Baumwollenindustrie. Er mußte hierauf den Zunftsatzungen gemäß seinen Laden aufgeben und von der Schneiderzunft in die Weberzunft übertreten; dagegen war es ihm erlaubt, die Barchentweberei mit unzünftigen Webern zu betreiben und seine Fabrikate selbst im Großhandel abzusetzen. Das Geschäft gewann bald erhebliche Ausdehnung, so daß sich B. 1726 mit Peter Gonzenbach verband, der es nach Bion's Tode allein übernahm und bedeutend erweiterte. H.
