    Westfäl. Adelsgeschlecht, zu dem unter anderem, und andere gehören (in Kurland: Kettler): Gotthard († 1587), letzter Meister des Deutschen Ordens in Livland, erster Herzog von Kurland (s. NDB VI), und sein Bruder →Wilhelm († 1582), Bischof von Münster (seit 1553, resign. 1557, s. ADB 43), die Herzöge von Kurland Jakob († 1681, s. NDB X), Friedrich Kasimir († 1698, s. NDB V) und Ferdinand († 1737, s. NDB V); ferner →Karl von Kettler (1812–93), preußisch Generalleutnant (s. ADB 51; Priesdorff VII, S. 473-76, Porträt), und →Hermann (1832–1916), preußisch Generalleutnant (ebenda X, S. 235 f.). Die Ermordung des deutschen Gesandten →Klemens Freiherr von K. (1853–1900, Neffe, Nichte von Wilhelm, siehe unten) während der Boxerunruhen in Peking war der Anlaß für den Chinafeldzug der fremden Mächte.
