  • Biographical Presentation

    Infolge der Zerstörung Frankenthals 1689 flüchteten B.s Eltern nach Amsterdam, wo B. als Kaufmann ausgebildet wurde. Daß er Theologie studierte, ist unwahrscheinlich. Er ging im Dienst der Ostindischen Kompanie nach Batavia und war 1710-16 Gouverneur der Küste Koromandel in Vorderindien, kehrte dann nach Amsterdam zurück und lebte seit 1719 als Privatmann zu Utrecht. B. stiftete am 18.8.1761 das Stipendium Bernardinum für kurpfälzische (Gebietsstand: 1761) und ungarische Theologiestudenten in Utrecht mit ursprünglich 9000 £ Aktien der Bank von England als Kapital. Die reiche, noch jetzt wirksame Stiftung macht B. zum Wohltäter der Reformierten Kirche der Pfalz.
