    B. studierte in Wien morgenländische Sprachen, wurde dann Sekretär des Reisenden und Assyriologen Claudius J. Rich. Vorübergehend betätigte er sich als Dolmetscher und Offizier im Dienste der East India Company. Seine Bedeutung für die assyriologische Wissenschaft beruhte weniger auf Quellenerschließung oder Entdeckertätigkeit - diese ist mehr Rich zuzuschreiben - als auf seiner erstaunlichen Fähigkeit, Keilschriftinschriften zu kopieren und auf diese Weise der gelehrten Welt den umfangreichen Stoff zugänglich zu machen. Seine entsagungsvolle Tätigkeit auf diesem Gebiete hat ihm die Anerkennung aller bedeutenderen Assyriologen seiner Zeit eingetragen.
